Evaluation Part 8 - Looking back at your premilmanary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progession from it to the full product ?

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product ?

As it was the first time I did media i was new to everything and the preliminary task was a challenge as i never really knew much about the shot types and also i never knew how to use the equipment. But it went good because my other two partners knew what they was doing. I think the camera shots we used were good and also the timing in the shots were good.

I think that the story line was to boring we wasn't creative enough. Even though the shot types were good we could of had more shots. The planning and research was key but because i wasn't there i didn't get much say in what we done. I found out that the timing was very important like when the door opened and on the other side when it closed.

When making my British social realist opening sequence when we done the filming i made sure that we done as many shots as we could and also done each shot from a different angle. This gave us choice of which shot to use and from which angle. I knew that the planning and research was key and if it good then our production would succeed. So I made sure that it was good and also i wanted to be creative but because it was a British Social Realist i couldn't get to excited and make sure it had vesnilitude of realism.

Evaluation Part 1 - Brief

The brief i was working towards was to produce a British social realist film opening aimed at 16-24 year olds. the title of the film is 'Everyone Pays' we chose this because it gives the audience some kind of idea of what it is about. but they still don't know if it's about money or revenge so it has a double meaning and would make the audience think. in our opening sequence we meet the two main characters Tony and Michael we see them getting up and getting ready. The Tony (the boss) calls up Michael to ask him to come in to fire him but Michael doesn't want to so Tony does it over the phone. The final edit of our opening sequence sticks to our treatment we changed some thing like by adding in a split screen to give more of an contrast between the lives of the two main characters. The opening sequence explores the themes of British social realism because we see the social class divide between Tony (middle class) and Michael (working class). In my research it showed that normally it's about the working class struggling to do better and that middle class people are rarely in these films. so i thought it would be original to have one in the film and would serve as a counterpoint. http://labs11.blogspot.com/2011/03/final-treatment.html

Feedback for treatment

Feedback for treatment

The feedback which we received was that we needed to make the institution and convention section better, and we improved these sections by saying why our unique selling point will make viewers more interested in our movie. we also had to make many spelling corrections because we rushed through it the first time.

We were also told to use examples of how other British social realist films made there movies appeal to niche audiences such as including sex and violence, we have also given a twist to ours.

Target Audience
Our target audience is very varied the age ranges from 18-30 it’s mainly aimed at males but females may also watch it and enjoy it. People who are in to gangs and the streets will enjoy it as well as working class people and also some middle class people could relate to it because of the middle class character in it. Other media consumptions will be programmes like ‘silent witness’ ‘The politics show’ ‘watchdog’ and ‘panorama’ also films like ‘adulthood’ ‘bullet boy’ and ‘The inside man’.  Because of the range of themes it should appeal to a lot of different people and it has a lot of stereotypes about different people and the representations of the working class and middle class people would help it appeal to the target audience.  The unique selling point is that it shows the contrast of the working and middle class most British Social Realist films don’t show both sides it shows both characters struggle and how their paths meet.  Furthermore, although this film is aimed at British audiences it can still be seen by other audiences so that it would give them an image of the struggles which British people face in there every day lives.
Technology
The technology I’m going to use is a: Panasonic camera, tripod and iMac. All of this is suitable, the camera and tripod are so that I can film and the tripod will keep it steady because I want to look as professional as I can. The iMac will play a big part because I’m planning to do a split screen in my opening and I will be using this when I start my editing. I won’t face any limitations because my opening is going to be simple. All the props will be easy to obtain because it will be different types of cloths and the tripod/camera will be provided by the school.

Representations
The key Characters are Michael and Tony they both work for the same company. Michael is a working class guy he is a protagonist and even though he turns to the street life he is only doing it to feed his family while he’s looking for work and is very likeable. The other character is Tony who is a successful business man but turns evil when he loses his company and all his wealth he is out to get revenge and is antagonist. Tony will challenge the representation of middle class people because he will be nothing like the typical middle class man.

Narrative
The story is about a Michael a working class man and his boss Tony a middle class man because of recession they both loss their jobs. Tony losses his company and wants to take revenge on the banks. Whereas Michael just wants money so that he can survive and feed his family. So Tony meets a Fraudster and then he begins to do bank scams so he can get money and take revenge. He uses his money to persuade Michael who is having a really bad to come and work for him. With Michael doing his dirty work Tony thinks he’s unstoppable but he gets to greedy and gets caught by the police. While Michael finds a new job and gets his life back on track.
The opening sequence is Michael and Tony Waking up in the morning getting ready. We see the contrast in the lifestyles and how they are. They both are going in to work on the day they are going to get fired. We see lots of newspaper articles about the recession.  Then Tony phones Michael to tell him that he fired from work Michael is upset and gets angry with Tony. Then Tony receives a call that his business is going to go bust.
Conventions
Our opening sequence will follow the normal British Social Realist convention By showing the working class having to struggle but it will be different as it will have a middle class person in it who ends up like the working class man. This will give the film a different perspective  because  British social realist films will generally have the a working class  person throughout whereas this movie will both convey the usual themes such as violence and sex, with a twist.
Style and Iconography
I will use a range of shots so that the audience can see what is going on. The use of close ups will help the audience know what the character is feeling. Also the camera will always be close to the person that it’s like there part of it the. The use of establishing shots will help set the location and tone. The editing between shots will have to be smooth and clean to create a relaxing feeling. The costumes and props will be everyday items to create the feeling that it’s real and make the audience believe it. Sound and music will be used to create mood and also set the tone for the opening.
Institution
The production company in the brief has impacted the type of film which will be produced because of a number of reasons mainly money with a low budget we can’t do anything expensive. The audience will be the audience that film4 target which is British.  The Distribution will be limited to Britain only because of money and will be exhibited in art houses. We will put this movie up in movie festivals for a big distributer to come and help fiancé this movie because the unique selling point of the movie is  middle class person who ends up like the working class man after losing his job.

Production log week 4

What have your learnt about your target audience ?

This week i have learnt that my target audience is going to be British working and middle class people because they can both relate to my film. The film is going to be a 18 and that means that it wont appeal to anyone below that age and both males and females will be targeted. Even though most British Social Realist films are aimed at a younger audience ours will aimed at a more vast age group due to the fact the main characters will be different ages.

What have you learnt about institutions involved in the production a British Social Realist film ?

The institutions involved in the production will tend to target a British niche audience and the conventions and themes in the film will appeal to this audience. The themes will usually revolve around current events happening in Britain and be controversial. The production company won't use sets and we use real life locations and film there to make the films real and the audience can relate to this.
How will this inform your production ?

This will inform my production because my film will be based around real life situations and i know what locations to use as well. All this will help my group to make the film appeal to the target audience better.

Production Log Week 3

What have you learnt about narrative structures and devices?

I have learnt narrative structures and devices are very important in an opening sequence. The opening credits in a film tell us about all the important roles in the production of the film and what 'stars' are going to be in it so before the film starts we know what type of film it is because we can tell by the actors in. For example 'Dirty Harry' has 'Clint Eastwood' in it so i could tell that it was going to have some sort of action in it and that its a big Hollywood film as well.

How will this inform your production?

This will inform my production because i understand what makes a good opening sequence even though i still think i can learn more. I now understand that opening credits in a film are very effective because the audience then know who is in the film and the important staff behind it.

What methods might you use in the opening and why?

In my opening sequence i think that i will have opening credits. Before i didn't want to use them but after seeing them i think it will be good if i used them because it Will make it look more professional. Also i want to use an array of diegetic and non-diegetic sound so it will add more effect in to it. I want the credits to interact in the opening sequence while the film running because i think this would look very effective. I also want to make my own theme tune and music for the opening so that i can make it appeal more because i done it personally.

Institutional Credits Opening Sequence

http://www.artofthetitle2.com/media/film/70s/dirty_harry/dirty_harry_ipod.mp4

What did you find out?

I found out that in an opening sequence it has a lot of opening credits and that its good to show some of the story. Also i found out that its good because then we have a better idea about the film. The sequence was also very long and the opening credits was showing over film so we could still see what's happening. Also it had music playing for the majority of the opening and the rest was other sounds (non-diegetic and diegetic)

Definition for any jobs you don't know?

Art Director - Various artists may create or develop specific parts of an art piece or scene; but a sole art director unifies the vision. In particular, the art director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how it communicates visually, stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. The art director makes decisions about visual elements used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion.

Dialogue supervisor/ make-up supervisor and supervising hair stylist : These jobs are to supervisor and make sure that everything they did is correct and if anything goes wrong its there job to correct the error.

What will you do in your?
I my opening sequence i will run my opening credits over the start of the film and i playing background music which will be the theme tune. I will make the credits interact with the start of the film so its part of it i.e like a boy will be spraying something on the wall and it will appear as the directors name or something like that.

Production Log 2

This week i have learnt that different social realist films relate to different audiences and target a niche audience. Even though they target British audiences they can also aim at a more specif audience like different regions. Each social realist film has a different theme some of the themes are: Violence (can be gang related), Sexuality, Addiction and immigration. But social realist films explore these films in different ways. Like in 'Bullet Boy' the accent and the slang language is target at a London audience as they would understand it whereas others may not.

This will inform my production because it gave me more of an idea of what social realist filoms are about and what they try to do. My orignal idea was to nice and happy and i know that realist films tend to be dark and gritty. So i have to change my idea and make it more gritty and dark so it can relate to the auidnce more.

The texts which influenced me the most are 'Bullet Boy' and 'Kidulthood' as it relates to the current gang culture that a lot of youths are involved in. They also showed me that these films and dark and gritty it made me want to base my film around them as its a good theme to choose. It's also easy to relate to as its all around me and easy to relate to.

I will conform to the conventions used in films i liked and the ones which reflect Britain the most as they would be most effective to conform to.

Week 1

Production log

At the start of the week we looked at past students work to give us an idea of what needs to done. This also showed us that a lot of detail needs to go in the work in order to obtain the best possible marks. We also got a mark scheme this showed us how work needed to go in the work in order to achieve well.

We looked at the planning & research, construction and evaluation of the past pupils. Having seen them all i saw that the planning & research was key because then everything would be made easier with good planning. Looking at previous students work informed my production cause i saw what worked and what didn't work. I also saw that time management was key as i missed a lesson on Monday fell behind so i had to do more work because i had to catch up and this will affect the quality of my work as i missed a lesson.

I will try to avoid missing any more lessons as it makes the work more hard for me and in the end will affect my final grade. I will avoid being to brief in my written work and try to write as much as i can and make my points clear so they are easy to understand. I will try to emulate some of the past students as their production had a lot creativity which enabled them to get the best possible mark.

When I'm doing my video blogs i need to speak very loud and clear. Try to use an array of media terminology to show that i understand the work i will also try to be confident in what i do. Even though i would talk about the good points i would also need to talk about the bad points so it shows i can improve and i look at all angles.

As you can see he is not very confident in what he is saying even though he makes a lot of good points and makes them clear. If he had presented them better and more confidently it would have shown that he understood the work better.

In this video the sound was a key part as it sets the tone and matches the genre they were using. The mise-en-scene in this was good as we saw the location and it established the theme. The shot types was good they used a of long shots this showed the scared body language of the girl and the menacing body language of the boy. This helped to established the characters and i knew what was going on it was every clear.

Evaluating Past Students Work

Candidate 1

Planning & Research

Strengths:

He gives good explanations in his production logs. This shows that he understands the work that he had to do.

He does good research in to films like the 'The Bourne Identity' and the 'The Dark Knight' showing that he was going to make a similar film.
He uses a spider diagram to show his potential thriller ideas this makes it easy to read and its very clear.

Weaknesses:

His thriller ideas are done on a spider diagram so even though they are clear i don't think he has written enough and could have done more.

His production log is very short he doesn't make many points and he starts to hesitates towards the end which shows he is unsure about what he is saying.

The Evaluation of previous students that he did is not presented very well as he just toke pictures of it so its unclear.

He generally doesn't use examples to support the points that he made.

Mark: I gave this part a 12/30 which is just level 3 he could of done better.

Construction

Strengths:
The lighting he uses is good it sets the mood in the scene.

The music he uses matches the scene and the mood the sound effects as well are also good as they help set the mood.

The close-up of his hand is good as it shows us that it's the same person and what previously happened to him.

Weaknesses:

The story is unclear and i don't understand what is going on and the camera shots don't help.

The soundtrack at the start goes on far to long and become boring and loses interest.

At the end it says reloaded and this makes no sense as it doesn't fit what i had just seen.

Mark: I gave it 32/60 which is a level 2.

Evaluation

Strengths:

He annotated the film clip good by using digital technology.

He was to the point and made good points he was able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of his work.

Weaknesses:

The group discussion they had was unclear.

He could have written more and made his points more clear.

Mark: I gave him 12/20 which is a level 3.

Candidate 2

Planning & Research

Strengths:

His planning is good he researches other films that are the same as the genre he wants to do.

He shows the actors that he wants in his film showing pictures and information about them.

He shows a good understanding as he analysis the film 'fight club'.

Weaknesses:

I can't find any weaknesses with this.

Mark: 19/20 level 4

Construction

Strengths:

The editing was good the typewriter effect was good as it related to the scene.

He used a variety of shots i liked the over the shoulder shots as it showed the facial expression of the character and added to the tension.

The Mise-En-scene is plain and simple and adds to the realism of piece.

Weaknesses:

The only weakness was that the dialogue was too low and i could just about hear it.

Mark: 54/60

Evaluation

Strengths:

He includes points from the audience so he hears there strong points about the film.

The presentation of the blogs was good so that everything was clear and easy to understand.

He links all his points to different aspects of his evaluation so everything is linked together.

Weaknesses:

I couldn't find no weakness with his evaluation.
